Péter Árendás won the 3rd place in the undergraduate research competition

On November 24 a conference for undergraduate research students took place at the Institute of Chemistry of Eötvös University. Péter Árendás, an undergraduate research student of our laboratory, gave a talk on "Graph theory methods in molecular spectroscopy" ("Gráfelméleti módszerek a molekulaspektroszkópiában") and won the 3rd place in the competition. The abstract of his talk and his research report (in Hungarian) can be found here. ...

Hydrogen-bond breaking in the water dimer

Gábor Czakó and co-workers published an article on the dissociation dynamics of the water dimer in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS) [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 134, 15430 (2012)]. Hydrogen bonding in water is dominated by two-body interactions. The joint theoretical and experimental work investigates the energy transfer and hydrogen-bond breaking in the water dimer, thereby providing new insights into the dissociation dynamics as well as the first spectroscopically accurate dissociation energies (D0) of the H2O and D2O dimers. ...

O + methane in PNAS

Gábor Czakó’s paper on the dynamics of the O + CHD3 reaction appeared in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S.A. (PNAS). PNAS (IF: 9.771) is one of the world’s most-cited multidisciplinary scientific serials. The PNAS paper reports the first ab initio full-dimensional potential energy surface for the O(3P) + methane reaction and provides theoretical support for recent experiments. Czakó’s work on polyatomic reaction dynamics has received a lot of attention, since his studies on the F and Cl + methane reactions were published...
